Artist Watch: Bindi Cole
She’s the next Tracey Moffatt I reckon! I met Bindi recently at the ANU Photographies Conference where we chatted a little about ‘making good’ in a very competitive industry. Seems to me that she’s on track with some interesting commentary on what it means to be Aboriginal. This show “Post Us” follows her recent “Not really Aboriginal” exhibition shown at both the CCP and as part of the Next Wave Festival. If you’re in Melbourne, check out her upcoming exhibition at Boscia Galleries in Flinders Lane:

Otherwise you can also look at some of Bindi’s more commercial work on her Flickr site.

I like Bindi’s eye for composition and natural flattering light effects. I used to photograph would- be models and know it’s quite simple (but not easy) to make good looking people look good. But as a gay man I say Bindi’s shots of footballers are more sexy than the bulk of the oppressive, camp torso worship with fake grease mark & fake oil/sweat ,hardman stare and ridiculous undone fly photos of Sydney’s gay photographers. It’s just me but I think her poster pastiches would be more powerful with the original copy unchanged. Keep on pushing Bindi, commercially & artilly.
