Off the Wall…. Off the Planet more like!

Back from fabulous Sydney. Love, love it there. Whirlwind trip but I packed it all in (I keep being blamed for the big nights out with friends, but hey I was perky the next day!).

The opening for Off the Wall at Art Sydney was on Thursday night. Odd night really – a lot of $$ floating around, it was all a bit surreal and slightly uncomfortable, particularly when you hear buyers contemplating the purchase of certain art pieces just to match their furniture!! I wonder if they realise the blood, sweat and tears that goes in to the creation of a lot of these works??

That said though, it was great to have my work there – in quite a prominent spot too, so the punters couldn’t not see it. Here are a few (not very good) installation shots:

Strangely, there wasn’t much other photography like mine there. Which I think is a good thing. Ultimately, it’s a good experience – at least I can say now that I’ve exhibited alongside the likes of Pro Hart (classical Australian painter), Matthew Sleeth, Alex Proyas and Samantha Everton (three very ‘in’ contemporary Australian photographers!!)

Whilst in Sydney I also got the chance to catch up with one of my favourite wrestlers and all round nice guy, Phil Picasso (better known as ‘The Birdman’ or ‘Chicken George’):

I’m completely digging the diptych at the moment. Will keep playing around with this I think. And I’ll keep making my usual portraits, which Barry Keldoulis insightfully wrote in the Off the Wall catalogue:

Lee Grant has in portraiture an incisive eye with an understanding of quirky composition and environment, posture and dress as definition of character.

Cool huh?

I’ve also been using the new Hasselblad 50mm, purchased with a materials award from the ANU School of Art. Noice!!
